Chapter 15

Uncertainty Under Pressure

A follow-up summit in Europe was called between the Western allies. Prime Minister Carrington hosted this one in London.

The former Soviet states were halfway into Kovalyov's three months to decide their allegiance to his unification decree. So far, the planned deceit by the countries was playing out well. Western European countries offered numerous options for the former countries to visit, and their people were coming in droves.

Kovalyov kept a watchful eye over the states, ensuring there wasn’t more to their delayed decision. The former republics asked Kovalyov to keep his people out of their countries out of respect for the momentous decision and allow their citizens to decide without pressure from Russian influencers.

The Russian leader reluctantly agreed, and the former states compromised by ensuring a constant flow of envoys back and forth to Moscow for discussions on the best approaches for rejoining the union. They knew Kovalyov had spies everywhere, so their deceit may quickly end as he figured out their plan.

The U.K. prime minister opened the summit with a warm welcome.

After a quick agenda review, he got down to business on the first topic by saying, “It seems like efforts to move women and children away from the front during the period are going well. Our established lines through both Finland and Italy are both working efficiently. Moreover, the ruse by the former republics is proceeding without issue with no indication that Russia is the wiser. It’s likely to fall apart soon, but our intelligence tells us that the former states are eighty percent ready today.”

Finnish President Lehtinen added, “We have established routes into Estonia and Latvia. Our teams have been careful because we know the Russians are patrolling by air, and they brought submarines to the Baltic to watch sea traffic. We know Kovalyov trusts no one. I give these countries a lot of credit; they still remember how to operate under the noses of their former Russian leaders.”

“We also have established strong lines into Croatia and Slovenia,” added the Italian Prime Minister Caponero. “The Russians don’t enjoy the same proximity with our routes, but we know they use routine airborne surveillance to watch Germany. So far, it has gone quite well. We’re smuggling countless women and children from the two countries into our country before the war begins.”

The U.S. President stated, “We’ll continue coordinating supplies with you and help in any way you need. We should break off relations immediately with the former states to help their cover story a little longer. If we appear displeased with them, Russia will take this as a huge win, which may help buy them more time. My team believes Russia is sensing that they are being played.”

Prime Minister Carrington agreed and said, “Makes sense. If we push them away now, it will keep the Russians guessing. Kovalyov’s ego will relish in the triumph.”

French President Corbin concurred as well and then changed the subject.

He asked, “Any intelligence from anyone on the robed warriors or the discs?”

Each responded no, and the French President seemed a bit agitated.
